Former RAF terrorist: Videos with Burkhard Garweg surfaced

Investigators have secured two videos in which the fugitive ex-RAF terrorist Burkhard Garweg can be seen and heard. The Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) will publish the recordings next week.

As the LKA confirmed to NDR Lower Saxony on Friday, one of the videos was recorded in an apartment in Hildesheim. Two screenshots from this material are to be published. Garweg’s voice can also be heard on a second video recorded in Berlin. “You can see him in his gestures, facial expressions and haptics,” said LKA spokesman Philipp Hasse on Friday. The video sequences were discovered as secured evidence during the evaluation, the LKA told NDR. They came from the Searches in February and March in Berlin, which investigators carried out as part of the search for Garweg and his alleged accomplices Ernst-Volker Staub, as well as the already arrested Daniela Klette. The police did not say when the recordings were made. First, the “Spiegel” reported on the new evidence.

LKA: “We hope for new clues”

According to the information, the State Criminal Police Office will now launch a new public search together with the Verden public prosecutor’s office. “We are hoping for new clues that will provide information about Burkhard Garweg’s whereabouts,” said Hasse. But it is also about new information about Ernst-Volker Staub.

Supermarket robbery in Hildesheim

Garweg is said to have robbed a supermarket in Hildesheim eight years ago, among other places, with Staub and Klebsiella. There are images from a surveillance camera of the robbery in May 2016. The images show the perpetrators covering their faces as they enter the supermarket as customers, breaking into an office and threatening money couriers with a weapon.

Increased search for Garweg

Since the arrest of the former RAF terrorist Daniela Klette in Berlin at the end of February, the authorities have been increasingly searching for 55-year-old Garweg and 69-year-old Staub. The trio is suspected of having carried out various robberies in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia between 1999 and 2016. They belonged to the so-called Third generation of the RAF. In 1998, the RAF declared itself dissolved. Its members had killed more than 30 people.
