Update from September 7, 8:43 p.m.: Goosebumps for the first time in Düsseldorf: Almost 50,000 fans sing the German national anthem – and at a Nations League match. The atmosphere today is likely to be just as good as it was at the European Championships.

Germany – Hungary -:-, 20.45

Germany lineup: ter Stegen – Kimmich, Tah, N. Schlotterbeck, Raum – Andrich, P. Groß – Wirtz, Havertz, Musiala – Füllkrug
Hungary line-up: Gulacsi – Balogh, Orban, M. Dardai – Nego, Schäfer, A. Nagy, Kerkez, Sallai, Szoboszlai – Varga
Goals:

Update from September 7, 8.40 p.m.: Before the game, Jamal Musiala will be honored. With his three goals at the European Championships, the youngster will receive the “Golden Shoe” for the tournament’s top scorer. He shares the award with five other players.

Update from September 7, 8:39 p.m.: The teams are coming onto the pitch!

Update from September 7, 8:35 p.m.: “Of course we have lost some of our mainstays,” explained national coach Julian Nagelsmann before the game on ZDF about the personnel situation. The national coach is optimistic: “In the end, it is always a great opportunity for everyone to usher in a new era.”

Update from September 7, 8:25 p.m.: The tension is rising in Düsseldorf. There are still 20 minutes until kick-off. The party is set to be a special one, especially for Joshua Kimmich and Marc-André ter Stegen. Kimmich is playing his first game as the new captain, ter Stegen is stepping out of Manuel Neuer’s shadow and will be the new first-choice goalkeeper in the DFB goal for the first time.

Update from September 7, 8:15 p.m.: The European Championship in Germany was a disappointment for the Hungarians. They started as dark horses, but were eliminated after the preliminary round after defeats against Switzerland (1:3) and Germany (0:2). The victory in the final group match against Scotland (1:0) was only a small consolation.

Update from September 7, 8 p.m.: Another 45 minutes and the ball will roll in Düsseldorf. Incidentally, this is already the third meeting between Germany and Hungary in the Nations League. So far, the DFB team is still without a win. In 2022, the first leg of the group stage was also 1-1 and the German team even lost 0-1 in the second leg in Berlin.

Update from September 7, 7.45 p.m.: The Hungarian line-up is also here. Coach Marco Rossi has avoided any major surprises, but compared to the last competitive game, the 3-0 win in the group match against Scotland at the European Championships, he has brought in three new players from the start. The biggest stars in his team include Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai and Leipzig’s Willi Orban.

Update from September 7, 7:31 p.m.: The line-up of the German team is here! Julian Nagelsmann is avoiding any big surprises. The new number one, Marc-André ter Stegen, is in goal. Nico Schlotterbeck will play alongside Jonathan Tah in central defence. As already announced, Pascal Groß will replace the retired Toni Kroos in midfield. In attack, Kai Havertz and Niclas Füllkrug will be in charge alongside the youngsters Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz.

This is how Germany plays: ter Stegen – Kimmich, Tah, N. Schlotterbeck, Raum – Andrich, P. Groß – Wirtz, Havertz, Musiala – Füllkrug

Update from September 7, 7:15 p.m.: There are still 90 minutes until kick-off in Düsseldorf! In about half an hour, fans will also know which starting eleven Julian Nagelsmann will be familiar with in the first game after the European Championships at home. With Pascal Groß and Niclas Füllkrug, the national coach had already guaranteed a place in the starting eleven for two professionals. Who are the other nine names in the squad?

First report from September 7, 4:50 p.m.: Düsseldorf – It was exactly 64 days ago that the European title dreams of the German national team and national coach Julian Nagelsmann ended in the quarter-finals of the home European Championship against Spain. Now, almost two months later, the DFB team is about to make a fresh start in the Nations League.

Following the resignations of Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller, Ilkay Gündogan and Toni Kroos, the national coach has to replace four key players. “We have a different starting eleven,” Nagelsmann said. With the exception of the four long-standing DFB pillars, the 37-year-old is relying mainly on the European Championship squad in the Nations League games against Hungary and three days later against the Netherlands.

Restart in the Nations League: DFB squad without four supports

20 players from the European Championship are still in the team. However, some will now be able and have to take on larger roles due to the retirements. One of them is Pascal Groß, who attended the press conference before the Hungary duel together with Nagelsmann. The 33-year-old was guaranteed a place in the starting eleven by the national coach, just like striker Niclas Füllkrug.

Two positions in the German line-up against Hungary have already been decided. And the new captain Joshua Kimmich, who will take over Neuer’s armband, and Marc-André ter Stegen, who will take Neuer’s place as number one, are both likely to play from the start in their new roles.

Before the match against Hungary: Nagelsmann will see EM “enthusiasm”

Much more important than the staff, however, is the positive support from the home European Championship, explained Nagelsmann. “The first game after the European Championship is important to get the fans back on board,” said Nagelsmann: “I will see the same enthusiasm to win as at the European Championship,” the coach made clear.

The setting is definitely set for this. Around 50,000 fans are expected in the sold-out Düsseldorf stadium on Saturday evening. And the DFB team will also take the Nations League, which is otherwise so often ridiculed, seriously. “It’s a good competition – and every footballer likes to hold a trophy in their hands,” said Füllkrug.

The German team’s goal in the six games until the end of the year against Hungary, the Netherlands and Bosnia-Herzegovina is clear: to win. The first and second placed teams in the group will advance to the quarter-finals in March. From there, they will move on to the Final Four and ultimately win the title in 2025 – one year before the most important tournament victory is due to follow at the 2026 World Cup. (LuHa/dpa)
