Thering leads CDU as top candidate in the state election

The CDU will enter the state elections on March 2 next year with Dennis Thering as its top candidate. A state assembly of representatives elected the 40-year-old state and parliamentary group leader to first place on the state list with almost 92 percent of the vote. 100 of 109 eligible voters voted for him, eight against him, and there was one abstention.

Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein, a member of the state parliament who recently switched from the FDP to the CDU, was elected second on the list. She received almost 80 percent of the approval rating.

Third place went to Vice President of the Citizens’ Assembly André Trepoll with almost 88 percent of the votes in favor. All three first-place candidates were elected without opposition. A total of 60 hearing places and four reserve places are to be awarded at the representatives’ meeting in the Chamber of Crafts.

Before his election, Thering had committed his party to a “three-way fight” with the SPD and the Greens in an emotional speech. “The Hamburg CDU is back,” he said, pointing to good poll and election results in the district and European elections. “We are industrious and we work hard – and that is why we will win the state election next year.” The CDU is “the only alternative to this red-green nonsense in Hamburg City Hall.”
