Pixel Watch: How long Google will provide the smartwatches with updates & Pixel feature drops for Wear OS

Google now has three generations of PixelWatch launched and improved many things both in terms of functionality and hardware components. Updates have always been a sensitive issue with Android smartphones and unfortunately this issue has also spread to offshoots such as smartwatches. In recent years, neither the manufacturers nor Google have covered themselves in glory, as updates were often practically non-existent or so enormously delayed that even the rollout was no fun. But this was also because Google itself did not always inform its own partners sufficiently or at all about WearOS. Be that as it may, with Google’s Pixel Watch entry, some things should change for the better.

Google Pixel Watches receive regular software updates, including security improvements, new features, operating system updates, and bug fixes. Software updates include security updates for Google Pixel Watch, as well as feature drops and other software updates.

Three years of software updates
On a support page, Google shows transparently how long updates for the smartwatches can be expected. The update guarantee for the Pixel Watch runs until October 2025, the Pixel Watch 2 ends in October 2026 and the last updates for the brand new Pixel Watch 3 will come in October 2027. This applies to both operating system updates and the security updates or bug fixes on the smartwatches.

Hopes that updates would be offered for a similar length of time as for smartphones have been dashed, at least for the current generation. This is a bit disappointing, but perhaps we can cling to the fact that they are talking about “at least” and that this period can be extended at any time.

A new Wear OS every year
There will be a new Wear OS version every year, just like Android. It will also create a regularity and keep up with new smartphone functions. This suggests that a new Wear OS will only be released annually after a new smartphone Android. The first Pixel Watch started with Wear OS 3.x, currently has 4.x and will soon receive the update to 5.x.

Pixel feature drops
In addition to the new updates, there will also be regular quarterly updates on the smartwatches. In the last two years, the smartwatches have in most cases been part of the feature drop package, although significantly less exciting and extensive than with the smartphones.

It remains to be seen whether Google will extend these three years by a reasonable period (compared to smartphones), because the lack of updates is disappointing.
