RSV Altenbögge wins 31:30 against Oberaden at the start of the new season, but after a clear half-time lead, they still have to worry at the end.

The party wasn’t over yet, but the RSV Altenbögge-Bönen players were already celebrating. In the first game of the season in the handball premier league, the “Red Devils” defeated local rivals SuS Oberaden 31:30 (19:11). “We knew it would be hard work.” “The way we threw ourselves into it was outstanding,” said a proud Eicke Jungemann, who had taken over on the hosts’ sidelines for the ill coach Dirk Schmidtmeier.

Red card against Lennart Kleigrewe

The home team got off to a better start, taking a two-goal lead after two minutes and holding onto it until the ninth minute (4:4). Up until then, it was a balanced derby. The party only tipped in RSV’s favor when SuS player Lennart Kleigrewe was shown the red card for a foul on Levin Lauenstein. Altenbögger took advantage of their numerical superiority and made it 8:6. From then on, the “Red Devils” would not give up the lead.

The RSV’s fast counterattacks found their way into the net, Altenbögge’s keeper Nils Schlechtendahl defused good attacks from the guests, and Eike Jungemann’s team also survived several two-minute penalties without any major problems. The hosts managed to reach the end of the first period with a score of 19:11. The community team almost even scored their 20th goal. Seconds before the half-time whistle, Felix Isenbeck failed to score after a fast counterattack, hitting the post.

Oberaden finally makes up ground

Despite the clear lead, Jungemann’s players still had a lot of work to do in the second half. Shortly after the break, RSV player David Böse received a two-minute penalty. Seconds later, Henning Lehmkemper was shown the red card for a foul in the circle. During this phase, SuS was able to make up some ground, but three goals from RSV afterwards meant the score was 23:14.
The SuS tried to turn things around and managed to catch up (30:28). Despite all the circumstances, the RSV did not let the derby victory be taken away from them.

Some of the balls went to the Red Devils or the Oberaden team did not use their opportunities. It was these 50/50 situations that could have decided the derby differently. But Jungemann’s team brought the lead to the finish and won 31:30. “I looked at the clock a lot. 60 minutes can be quite a long time.”
