Shooting at Joppatowne High School in Maryland: Latest News – Hollywood Life

During the first week of school at Joppatowne High School in Maryland, a 16-year-old student shot and killed a 15-year-old classmate. The suspected shooters fled the school grounds but were reportedly caught shortly afterward. Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler held a press conference later that day to explain what happened at the school.

“Within 15 minutes, more than 100 police officers from all of our partner agencies were here,” Gahler said of the police response, according to several media reports.

What happened at Joppatowne High School?

On Friday, September 6, the 16-year-old allegedly shot and killed a classmate who is currently in the hospital, several media outlets reported. The name of the suspected shooter was not publicly released at the time of publication.

Police tweeted a public message advising residents that this was not an “active shooting.”

“Please note this is an isolated incident and not an active shooter. Avoid the area,” tweeted the Harford Sheriff’s X-Account. “The reunification center where parents can pick up their children is Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church.”

Before the Harford County Sheriff’s press conference, a public school spokesperson told 11 News that a message had been sent to the students’ families.

“This is important news for our Joppatowne High School community,” the message said, according to the outlet. “The Harford County Sheriff’s Office was called to the school today in response to an isolated incident on campus. A fight occurred on campus between known parties. A weapon was brought onto campus and used in the incident. The HCSO and HCPS are working together to get this information to you. Was there a mass shooting at Joppatowne High School?

At the time of publication, one student was shot, so according to multiple reports, there was no mass shooting at Joppatowne High School. The victim is still hospitalized at the time of publication, according to Dr. Sean Bulson, superintendent of Harford County Schools.

“Our sympathies for the victim and his family are heartbroken,” Bulson said, according to CBS News. “This kind of thing should not happen in schools. … Sadly, we stand here today to discuss yet another school shooting. A tragic day, four days after the start of school.”

Bulson also noted, according to the outlet, that it has not yet been decided when the high school will reopen to students.
