As robust as the Apple Watch Ultra, but costs only 299 euros: Amazfit presents the T-Rex 3

Smartwatch manufacturer Amazfit has presented a new model of its outdoor and sports smartwatches at IFA 2024: the T-Rex 3. The manufacturer advertises the model as particularly robust and durable, which is strongly reminiscent of the sales arguments of Apple’s Apple Watch Ultra 2 – except that the Amazfit model is significantly cheaper.

Admittedly, the two devices could hardly be more different visually. The T-Rex 3 with its round display and robust metal and plastic casing is more reminiscent of Garmin models such as the Fenix ​​​​7X Solar. Apple, on the other hand, has opted for an “edgy” style with the Apple Watch Ultra 2 – in keeping with the Apple portfolio.

Impressive battery life and practical design

The square design of the Apple Watch also has disadvantages: it gets caught on obstacles more easily, and the flat outer frame of the case does not protect the display as well. In contrast, the Amazfit case with its protruding frame offers more protection for the display. In addition, smartwatches with a round display are less likely to get caught on obstacles – even if it is just a piece of clothing when putting it on.

When comparing battery life, the Amazfit T-Rex 3 is clearly ahead. According to the manufacturer, its battery lasts an impressive 27 days with typical use. Even with more intensive use, up to 13 days are still possible. In contrast, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 only lasts 36 hours with normal use, and lasts a maximum of 72 hours in power saving mode. This makes the Amazfit T-Rex 3 the clear winner in terms of endurance.

T-Rex 3 can withstand more heat and cold

The Amazfit T-Rex 3 is particularly robust and can withstand extreme conditions: despite temperatures of up to 70 degrees, it can withstand extreme cold of minus 30 degrees Celsius and is waterproof up to 100 meters. The Apple Watch Ultra is also waterproof up to 100 meters, but can “only” handle temperatures between minus 20 degrees and 55 degrees Celsius.

For everyday use or less extreme activities, both smartwatches offer comprehensive health tracking as well as numerous modes for common sports. The Amazfit T-Rex 3 also has a special strength training mode that records and counts repetitions and sets.

Price and availability

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 costs 899 euros. The Amazfit T-Rex 3 is now available in the manufacturer’s shop for 299 euros – that’s about a third of the price Apple charges for its Ultra Watch 2.
