Some Pixel 9 owners report problems with automatic brightness, but there is a solution

Some Pixel 9 owners are experiencing issues with auto-brightness, which could be due to the device’s adaptive brightness feature.

Discovered by Android AuthoritySeveral Pixel 9 Pro XL users have taken to Reddit to complain about the device’s strange auto-brightness behavior. For example, one user complained that the Pixel 9 Pro XL is always dimmer than he would like. And while I haven’t had any issues with my Pixel 9, I find myself increasing the brightness more often than before.

One Redditor suggested that people who transferred their data from a previous phone may have adopted the adaptive brightness model, causing weird brightness issues.

Adaptive brightness is one of many “adaptive” features on Pixel devices that use machine learning to adapt to user preferences. The idea is that every time you adjust the brightness on your Pixel phone, it “learns” from that change, so hopefully you won’t have to adjust in similar situations. However, if this model is ported to a new device, there could potentially be issues if the displays are different.

The solution to the problem seems to be to clear the adaptive brightness settings, which seems to have worked for several Reddit users. To do this, users need to dive deep into the Settings app: Settings > Apps > See all apps > Device Health Services > Storage and cache > Clear storage > Reset adaptive brightness.

Of course, even if you do this, you’ll still have to wait a bit for the phone to relearn your settings. Still, it seems to help others, so if you’re having issues with brightness, it might be worth a try.
