That was the first statement that MT Melsungen made on Saturday in the European League against the Norwegian runner-up Elverum Håndball. The 28:23 victory is a decent result ahead of the return match next weekend in the Terningen Arena.

Parrondo expects a tough match

In between, the North Hesse team must concentrate fully on the start of the new season of the DAIKIN Handball Bundesliga. Just 46 hours before the return match in Elverum, Roberto Garcia Parrondo’s team will be in action in the Phoenix Contact Arena in Lemgo.

“In the last few days we have only been preparing for the game in Lemgo and have not talked about Elverum.” “I will be very careful that my players do not already think about playing in the European League,” reveals the MT coach.

Parrondo expects a tough match in Lemgo – also because of the conditions there: “I’m expecting a sold-out arena and the well-known hot atmosphere with lots of emotions.” “Everyone knows how difficult it is to survive there.”

In his preparation for the TBV, he pointed out, among other things, his strong, uncompromising defense and the often successful “seven against six” game. “We want to try to create different opportunities for the individual players to get a shot on goal with long attacks. Overall, we have to play a really good game if we want to have a chance.”

Best keeper of the championships

Lemgo is considered a well-rehearsed team and has already shown great form before the season: “The Lemgo team is the world champion in preparation,” said Handball-World. The TBV has won two of its 13 test matches. The Kehrmann crew has also won each of the four tournaments in which it has taken part. They are accordingly fired up before the upcoming match, as the headline on the Lemgo homepage reads: “TBV wants to cause a surprise in the cauldron.”

Last season’s tenth-placed team only has three new players to integrate: left winger Hendrik Wagner (Wetzlar), right winger James Faust (Kiel) and goalkeeper Constantin Möstl (Alpla Hard). Möstl stands out as a real coup. The 24-year-old Austrian became the best goalkeeper of the championships at the European Championships in Germany with 81 saves.

Statistically just ahead

Promoted in 2005, handball Bundesliga club MT Melsungen is entering its 20th season in the highest German league on Thursday. The duels with the opponent from Lipperland have been going on for just as long. The result: Melsungen is just ahead. TBV Lemgo Lippe managed its last victory against the North Hesse team in May 2022, in front of the home fans in Kassel of all places.

It is not yet certain whether MT will be able to compete in Lemgo with a full team. At least Elvar Örn Jonsson was back in the team against Elverum. However, the injured Amine Darmoul and Arnar Freyr Arnarsson are missing. But no matter what the line-up, the Parrondo team will now follow up on their good debut at European level in the league.
