Remakes of Persona 1 and 2 are not currently on Atlus' "plan", but the producer of the JRPG series "would like to do it at some point"

Most of Atlus’ persona Series has received a kind of remake, with Persona 3 Reload is the most current version – with the exception of the first two games, although that may change one day.

In an interview with GameSpotlong-time Persona producer and P-Studio director Kazuhisa Wada reveals that there are currently no remakes of the first two installments of the JRPG series in the works – but that doesn’t mean they never will be. While work on Persona 3 Reload will resume with the release of the Game-sized epilogue DLC, Episode AigisWada explains that he is thinking about remakes of Persona 1 and 2, although there are no official plans for that yet.

“It’s not on my agenda right now,” says the producer. “I’d like to do it at some point.” That’s enough to give me hope – after all, the Persona 3 remake came out nearly two decades after its original release in Japan in 2006. That long gap between an original and its modern version is a big reason why it’s so difficult to pull off a remake. With Persona 3, “the hardest part was creating a production structure and designing and getting the project approved.”

After nearly 20 years, Wada says, the developers had to “find the best way to convey the essence of the content that was controversial at the time and change it for the better.” Portraying characters that hadn’t appeared for so long and “the game’s themes in an appealing way” understandably deserved a more involved process. The same would likely apply to any remakes of Persona 1 or 2 — which might be why they aren’t in the works yet.

Persona’s remakes and enhanced re-releases, from Persona 3 Reload to Persona 5 Royal, are more than successful enough to justify Atlus’ return to the series’ darker origins. They’re also introducing new fans to games they might never have played otherwise—I myself learned to love Persona thanks to Persona 4 Golden, and have played every entry except 1 and 2 since. If Wada gets his “someday,” though, that could very well change.
