Borisav “Bora” Djordevic, known as Bora Čorba, has passed away at the age of 71. He leaves behind a significant influence on the Balkan music scene.

Djordevic was born on November 1, 1952 and shaped the cultural landscape in the former Yugoslavia as a rock musician and poet. In the 1970s he found his musical expression in bands such as “Zajedno”, “Suncokret” and “Rani mraz” with Đorđe Balašević.

First steps on stage

Djordevic’s first performances were with bands such as “Dečaci sa Morave”, “Vesnici ljubavi”, “Safiri” and “Čačanski plemići”. His time with “Poslednji ostatak romantičnog sveta” (PORS) together with Radomir Mihajlović Točak, who later became known as the frontman of the band Smak, was particularly formative.

From youthful pranks to success

The band used burglaries to finance instruments, Djordevic was briefly imprisoned and eventually forced to change schools to Belgrade. There he began his secondary education and later enrolled at the Faculty of Law. Soon after, he switched to performing arts, but was unsuccessful.

Riblja Čorba: Era of Yugoslavian rock

In 1978, Djordevic founded the band Riblja čorba, which quickly rose to fame. His socially critical lyrics not only led to success, but also to controversy. For example, in 1990, following the album Koza nostra, he was accused of insulting the working class, but the charges were dropped.

Musical milestones

Riblja čorba had big hits with songs like “Rokenrol za kućni savet” and “Ostani đubre do kraja”. After a break due to military service, the band returned to the stage in 1981 with popular songs like “Ostaću slobodan” and “Dva dinara druže”. Further successes followed with “Pekar, lekar, apotekar” and “Na Zapadu ništa novo”.

Ups and downs in the 80s and 90s

In the 1980s, Riblja čorba celebrated its position as one of Yugoslavia’s leading bands with hits such as Kad padne noć and Gde si u ovom gluvom hotelu. Despite difficult political conditions, the band continued to successfully release music such as Zelena trava doma mog and Gastrabajerska pesma in the 1990s.

Legacy of music history

With the album “Pišanje uz vetar” in 2001, the band released the hit “Ljubav ovde više ne stanuje”, inspired by Đorđević’s personal experiences.

Bora Djordevic left a deep mark through his music and lyrics and will be remembered as a central figure in the rock scene in the former Yugoslavia.
