Before the start of the 105th NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs are considered the first contenders for the title. The team led by superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes is aiming for a third Super Bowl victory in a row, something no one has ever achieved. Their first opponent on Friday night (2:20 a.m.) is the Baltimore Ravens, who have strengthened their team with running back Derrick Henry and also have ambitions. Left tackle Bernhard Raimann is entering his third season with the Indianapolis Colts.

In Kansas City, the core of the team has remained intact except for cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, and Mahomes has been given two new starting positions in rookie hopefuls Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown. “It’s good that many of the people from last year are still here, and we’ve also got new ones, so we’ll quickly be back on the same page,” Mahomes said in a recent NBC interview and explained: “I’m looking forward to the season because I think we have a great offense.

In terms of star factor, the Chiefs have long since surpassed all other teams since last year. Since tight end Travis Kelce and pop star Taylor Swift officially entered into a relationship, the franchise has enjoyed considerable growth in its young and especially female fans. “I think it’s cool to see that girls and women are really excited about football,” said three-time Super Bowl MVP Mahomes, himself the father of a young daughter.

Getting to know Swift was something special for him, Mahomes revealed in an interview with former NFL player Chris Simms. “And she’s really interested in football and asks a lot of good questions. She’s also started to design plays,” added the 28-year-old. “Maybe we’ll incorporate one.” Considering that Chiefs coach Andy Reid is a coach who has always liked to break with conventions, that actually seems like a conceivable option.

The San Francisco 49ers are still considered the first challenger to the team from the state of Missouri, although coach Kyle Shanahan had to deal with a long list of injuries during the preparation. The Californians have also had a rough summer. Star tackle Trent Williams and top wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk missed almost the entire training camp because both were gambling on improved contracts – ultimately with success. The first to be absent is offensive hopeful Ricky Pearsall, who was shot during a robbery.

The Ravens, the Detroit Lions, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers are also hoping to make it to the finals. The latter have quarterback Jordan Love, one of the rising stars of the previous season, under contract and currently one of the three highest-paid players in the league (annual salary of 55 million US dollars).

The Chicago Bears have acquired another potential star at quarterback in the offseason. Caleb Williams was the first pick in the NFL draft in April and is expected to solve a long-standing playmaker problem. The 22-year-old, most recently active at the University of Southern California, has already drawn comparisons with Mahomes with his style. The Bears have not won a playoff game in almost 14 years.

The NFL, meanwhile, continues to focus on internationality. On September 6, the Packers will face the Philadelphia Eagles in the Brazilian metropolis of Sao Paulo, and there will also be three games in the long-established outpost of London. The New York Giants will play the Carolina Panthers in Munich on November 10.
