DFB team starts preparation: Rest for Bayern trio

DFB team starts preparation: Rest for Bayern trio

The day after Joshua Kimmich was appointed as the new captain, national coach Julian Nagelsmann began the national football team’s preparations for the Nations League opener against Hungary. All 23 players were present at the first training session on the pitch in Herzogenaurach. Jamal Musiala only took part in the warm-up program.

According to the DFB, the 21-year-old from FC Bayern Munich was subsequently rested for reasons of load management. Captain Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic are also not taking part in the full program. Like Musiala, they were in action on Sunday evening in the Bundesliga in Bayern’s 2-0 win over SC Freiburg.

Training goal: Consolidate EM things

In the training sessions leading up to the party on Saturday (8.45 p.m./ZDF) in Düsseldorf, Nagelsmann and his coaching staff will not make any major changes to the game system or style of play, but will instead build on the content of the European Championships at home. “We will not actually do anything new in this training session, but will try to consolidate things.” We did well at the European Championships, but there are still a few things missing before we can achieve perfection. “We are convinced of the content of what we have started there,” said Nagelsmann.

But one thing is clear: at least three positions in the starting lineup have to be filled, now that the retired European Championship regulars Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gündogan are no longer part of the team. Nagelsmann has already decided that Marc-André ter Stegen will replace Neuer in goal.

The first candidate for Kroos’ position is the new Dortmund player Pascal Groß. “Pascal is one of the players who can do that well.” “He plays a similar role in Dortmund to what Toni did with us,” said Nagelsmann. The national coach has not yet commented on who will take on Gündogan’s role in the attacking midfield.

Newcomer Stiller gets to show himself

Angelo Stiller will be able to show himself in training for the first time in Franconia. The 23-year-old is the only newcomer to the DFB squad. “Angelo brings a lot with him. He played a very good season in Stuttgart and deserves to show himself here in the national team,” said Nagelsmann.

After the opening match against Hungary, the DFB team played its second match in the Nations League against the Netherlands three days later in Amsterdam. The other opponent is Bosnia-Herzegovina. Nagelsmann is clearly aiming for first place in the group.
