PAYONE enables Tap to Pay on the iPhone in Germany

German companies of all sizes can now accept contactless payments using an iPhone and the PAYONE Tap on Mobile App. No additional hardware required.

PAYONE, a joint venture between Worldline, a global market leader in payment services, and the DSV Group, the payment competence center of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, is introducing a new payment solution for merchants in Germany – Tap to Pay on the iPhone via the PAYONE Tap on Mobile App.

Tap to Pay on iPhone enables merchants to accept all types of contactless payments, including contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay and other digital wallets, using only an iPhone and the PAYONE Tap on mobile app – without the need for additional hardware or payment terminals.

With Tap to Pay on iPhone, the merchant at the checkout can simply ask the customer to hold their contactless debit card, iPhone, Apple Watch or other digital wallet near the merchant’s iPhone and the payment is made securely using NFC technology.

Apple’s Tap to Pay technology uses iPhone’s built-in features to protect business and customer data. When processing a payment, Apple does not store card numbers on the device or on Apple servers.

By simply downloading the PAYONE Tap on Mobile app from the App Store and registering, merchants can set up their iPhone to accept contactless payments without the need for additional hardware. In addition, they have access to transaction history and the ability to manage their other Tap on iPhone-enabled devices directly in the app.

Simple and secure processing of contactless payments

Tap to Pay on iPhone also supports PIN entry, which includes accessibility options. Both small-value payments and larger amounts above the contactless limit of EUR 50 can be processed quickly and securely using PIN entry. If desired, an invoice or receipt can be sent to the customer by email or by scanning the QR code.

Can be used independently or as a practical addition to primary payment solutions

The new product can be used independently or – especially for medium and large retail companies – as a supplement to an existing terminal at the point of sale (POS): Advisory and sales staff can initiate the payment process directly in the store using their iPhone: The trip to the cash register and standing in line are thus no longer necessary for the customer, which ensures an individual and seamless shopping experience. Other areas of application include restaurants, delivery services, taxi services or market businesses.

Ottmar Bloching, CEO of PAYONE, is convinced that the demand for mobile payments is constantly increasing. This trend is also confirmed by our current consumer study, in which 32% of respondents demand payment by smartphone from retailers as a payment method in brick-and-mortar stores. With Tap to Pay on the iPhone and our PAYONE Tap on Mobile app, we are meeting this expectation on both the retailer and consumer side. The new payment solution offers small and micro retailers, as well as major customers, the opportunity to increase sales and customer loyalty by being able to focus entirely on looking after their customers. They benefit from both the intensive personal advice and the elimination of queues at the traditional checkout areas, which previously often led to the planned purchase being abandoned. In addition, handling payments via the app is intuitive, simple and completely flexible in terms of location.”

Tap to Pay on the iPhone via the PAYONE Tap on Mobile App is now available for all PAYONE customers throughout Germany.
