Jannik Sinner makes quarter-finals at the US Open perfect

Jannik Sinner makes quarter-finals at the US Open perfect

Tennis star Jannik Sinner showed nerves of steel on his title mission in New York and reached the quarterfinals of the US Open for the second time in his career.

The world number one from Italy won a high-class match late on Monday evening with 7:6 (7:3), 7:6 (7:5), 6:1 against the American Tommy Paul and made a showdown with Daniil Medvedev in the round of the last eight perfect.

On Wednesday, the Australian Open final will be replayed. Sinner turned a 0-2 set deficit against the Russians in Melbourne in January to win his first Grand Slam title.

“It will be a tough match. I have to be mentally and physically ready. I hope for a good match. I hope you enjoy it,” said Sinner. He was knocked out by Medvedev in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon around two months ago.

Against Paul, Sinner had to push himself to the limit for the first time in the tournament; the world number 14 demanded everything from the South Tyrolean in the first two sets in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Tennis: Top favorite Sinner in quarterfinals at US Open

In the tiebreaks, however, Sinner, unlike the American, kept his nerve and turned things around. In the third set, he was unstoppable on his way to the quarter-finals and used his first match point to win after around three hours.

After the surprise elimination of Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz and Olympic champion Novak Djokovic, the sinner is the top favorite for the title in Flushing Meadows. He would have met the Spaniard Alcaraz in a possible semifinal.

Sinner also seems to have completely shaken off the doping scandal surrounding him before the last Grand Slam of the year, even though he is under close observation after two positive tests for the anabolic steroid clostebol in March and a subsequent acquittal in the US metropolis.

Before the Italian, world number ten Alex de Minaur from Australia reached the quarterfinals on Monday evening with a 6:0, 3:6, 6:3, 7:5 win against his compatriot Jordan Thompson. The young Briton Jack Draper is waiting there.
