Schedule / Preview Day Nine US Open 2024 (Tuesday, September 3) with Fritz-Zverev, Navarro-Badosa and Qinwen Zheng-Sabalenka

On the ninth day of the US Open, the first quarterfinals of the tournament are scheduled with Aryna Sabalenka, Alexander Zverev and Paula Badosa. Our preview takes a look at the action

Even though there aren’t too many matches scheduled for Day 9 of the US Open, it’s still going to be a very interesting and packed schedule. There are only four matches on the schedule, but all four will be played at Arthur Ashe Stadium, making it an unforgettable experience for players and fans alike.

Since we only have games on Ashe, we will not split the schedule by court, as all games will be played on the same court. There will be no changes to the way the games will be played, so the schedule will begin at 12:00 noon local time.

The first match will be contested by two players who were both born in New York, which is an interesting thing. Paula Badosa will face Emma Navarro, and both have played amazing tennis so far in this event. Badosa hasn’t had the toughest draw, but she has faced some difficult opponents and handled most of them very well.

Emma Navarro had a difficult draw and faced some really tough opponents. She barely survived against Marta Kostyuk and the match against Coco Gauff was not the easiest either, but she found solutions in both cases and won them in three sets. That’s what makes Navarro so strong. She is a player who can play at a really high level and she will have the support of the crowd in this match.

Emma Navarro has been in excellent form these two weeks.

Badosa will have to be very alert and solve problems on the spot, but Navarro will make it very difficult for her. All in all, it’s a really nice match to start the day with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

The second match on Ashe and the final match of the day’s schedule will be between Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz. It’s quite interesting that this match wasn’t moved to the night, but there’s a chance that Zverev wasn’t too keen on it. One of his matches this week finished very late, so he probably would have liked to continue earlier.

It’s a pretty intriguing match between two players who are pretty much on the same level. Both have had great performances at the US Open so far, so it’s sure to be a pretty complicated match. Zverev is the favorite simply because he’s the higher-ranked player and has generally had one of the best seasons of his life so far. He even leads the tour in match wins this year, which proves it all.

Taylor Fritz had previously defeated Ruud.

Fritz will have the support of the crowd though and he will be keen to reach the semi-finals after failing to do so a few times in the past. This year it might finally happen as he has been really strong so far and maybe it’s just this year. The draw is very open and all of these players certainly fancy themselves in good shape.

After these first two matches of the day, we will have two more matches in the night shift, and the first of these will start at 7pm local time, as it has done in the past few days. It is a WTA match, namely a rematch of this year’s Australian Open final, where Aryna Sabalenka will face Qinwen Zheng. They played each other in Melbourne in January, and Sabalenka won that match quite clearly.

Zheng has looked pretty strong for much of this year and is certainly a better player than she was in January and more adept at big matches. She recently won the Paris Olympics and beat Iga Swiatek en route to the final, so she is certainly capable of winning big matches. But it will take an impressive performance to beat Sabalenka as the Belarusian is very good.

She is playing at a top level and is the favorite to win after reaching the finals last year. It’s just an amazing matchup that should make for an intriguing game and that’s why it was chosen as one of the games for the evening’s premium schedule.

The second match of the night shift and the last match of the day is an ATP match where crowd favorite Frances Tiafoe faces Grigor Dimitrov. It is a very interesting match between the very unpredictable Tiafoe and a consummate professional like Dimitrov, who has shown amazing performances in recent years.

The Bulgarian has had some success in New York in the past, but he would argue that he has never played as well as he has in recent years. A final in Miami earlier this year proves that he is really comfortable on these courts, and there is nothing to fear in a match with Tiafoe.

Fatigue could be a factor as he played a five-set match before this one. Tiafoe is also younger and certainly in better shape overall, so the American would probably fancy his chances in a very long match. He will certainly fancy his chances as he will be fuelled by a busy schedule and that is when Tiafoe plays his best tennis. It is a great way to end the day of tennis in New York as it promises to be a really close match no matter who wins.

Overall, it promises to be a really exciting day of tennis, with four really good matches that will show us which four players will go through to the semi-finals. We have excellent matches and some really great competitors. It should be a superb day of tennis too, which you can read all about here. Stay with us for daily reports from those matches and then also for a recap tomorrow morning to find out what happened the day before.
