Steam locomotive show in Meiningen draws first conclusions

Barely a month after its opening, the steam locomotive adventure world in Meiningen has welcomed almost 4,000 visitors. “The feedback is overwhelmingly positive,” said director Johanna Weißler. “We are a young museum that still wants to grow.” The exhibition will be continually developed.

The large permanent exhibition opened at the beginning of August after several years of planning and construction. Covering 900 square meters, including special exhibitions, the experience world in an old canteen building on the grounds of the steam locomotive works in Meiningen provides an insight into the history, significance and function of steam locomotives.

The highlight of the exhibition, especially for younger visitors, is the walk-in driver’s cab of the steam locomotive, said Weißler. For the exhibition, a historic steam locomotive was dismantled into several parts so that guests can get an idea of how the technology behind it works. Weißler also likes the videos about work in the neighboring steam locomotive factory. Employees of a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn still repair or maintain steam locomotives there today.

After the opening, the adventure world is now facing another acid test: on September 7th and 8th, thousands of visitors are expected to attend the Meiningen Steam Locomotive Days with guided tours of the steam locomotive works. The adventure world will then be offering a reduced entrance fee of five euros. Guided tours of the exhibition are also included in the entrance fee for time slot tickets.
