Prime Minister Weil: Far from the SPD’s claim

The Prime Minister of Lower Saxony and SPD state chairman Stephan Weil has called the federal party to account following the projections for the state elections in Saxony and Thuringia. It is “obvious” that the result is “far from the SPD’s claim to be a nationwide people’s party,” Weil was quoted as saying in a statement by the SPD state association in Lower Saxony.

“Just as after the European elections, the federal party is faced with the pressing question of how the SPD can convince citizens with its policies again one year before the federal elections,” said Weil. The SPD must now “fully concentrate on the state elections in Brandenburg in three weeks, where Dietmar Woidke, an experienced and highly respected state premier, will be running for the SPD,” explained Weil.

After that, however, “preparations for the federal elections in a year will begin and with it the urgent task for the SPD to significantly improve its own chances of success by then.”

In Thuringia, the SPD is still below its worst result to date in Thuringia in 2019 (8.2), with 6.1 to 6.4 percent. In Saxony, the SPD is expected to achieve 7.5 to 7.8 percent (2019: 7.7), according to projections.
