The FCSG at Lugano in the Super League

The FCSG at Lugano in the Super League

Football

It remains 1:1: After a rather weak second half, FCSG takes a point from Lugano

After the European success, the next championship game was played: FC St.Gallen played away against FC Lugano in Cornaredo. The Espen avoided a real horror start and even took the lead shortly afterwards. Lugano’s equaliser shortly before half-time was the last excitement in this match. In the second half, both teams were extremely lackluster.

It wasn’t FC St.Gallen that beat YB. It wasn’t FC St.Gallen that brought GC to its knees and beat Lausanne either. Perhaps they were too focused on qualifying for the Conference League and their strength is at an end. In any case, the Espen lacked the attractive offensive game that they have been used to recently.

There are also some positives to be taken from today’s party. There weren’t many chances, but the ones that there were were promising. Geubbels showed his good side today, but unfortunately he lacked good passing partners in the attack. St. Gallen’s defense also worked relatively well today. The midfield often kept the Luganesi in check and there were plenty of attacks and chances. But with a few exceptions they were cleverly prevented from scoring. Lukas Görtler was a good playmaker today. His header to make it 1-0 was one of the few bright spots in this game.

In addition, things could have been worse today. In the 8th minute, the Espen avoided a real horror start after Kacper Przybylko’s goal was declared invalid by the video assistant. His colleague Lukas Mai was offside. 10 minutes later, the score was 1-0 and everything could have been perfect.

But that wasn’t it. St. Gallen tried to bring stability and calm to the game throughout, but Luganesi took advantage of the moments of weakness. That, coupled with a shaky offensive game, made St. Gallen look rather pale. All of this culminated in the equalizer shortly before half-time. The referee whistled for offside, but the video assistant decided that Kacper Przybyklo’s goal counted this time.

In the second half, the Espen started promisingly with a beautiful long-range shot from Christian Witzig. Willem Geubbels could have quickly converted the rebound, but the Luganesi defense was already there. There were two or three more chances of a similar nature, but that was the end of the highlights of this party. FC Lugano was just as unconvincing, but at least they had significantly more possession of the ball.

FC St.Gallen was unable to make up for this dominance, even with numerous substitutions. The result remained unchanged and so FCSG can at least take home a point from Lugano. But they can definitely be satisfied with that.
