Saxony election: CDU narrowly leads AfD – Greens and Left have to tremble

The CDU led by Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer is set to win the Saxon state election. According to initial forecasts, the AfD is close behind. The SPD will probably make it back into parliament, but it will be close for the Greens and the Left Party.

According to initial forecasts, the CDU is in first place in the state elections in Saxony. The AfD follows closely behind.

The Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) alliance came third in its first state election in the Free State. The Social Democrats came a long way behind.

The Greens and the Left Party have to worry about entering the state parliament. The Greens barely make it over the five percent hurdle, the Left Party is below it.

Thanks to a basic mandate clause, parties with two direct mandates can enter the Saxon state parliament, even if they receive less than five percent of the second votes. The FDP will definitely not be represented in parliament.

The first forecasts from ARD and ZDF at a glance:

  • CDU: 31.5 percent (ARD) / 32 percent (ZDF)
  • AfD: 30.0 percent / 31.5 percent
  • BSW: 12 percent / 11.5 percent
  • SPD: 8.5 percent / 7.5 percent
  • Green: 5.5 percent / 5.0 percent
  • Left: 4.0 percent / 4.5 percent

In the state elections five years ago, the CDU came first with 32.1 percent of the second votes, ahead of the AfD (27.5 percent). The Left Party rose to 10.4 percent. The SPD is at 7.7 percent, behind the Greens with 8.6 percent. The FDP missed out on a place in the state parliament with 4.5 percent.

Until now, Kretschmer has governed together with the SPD and the Greens in a so-called Kenya coalition. The CDU politician has always ruled out an alliance with the AfD, but not a coalition with the BSW.

According to ARD forecasts, the currently ruling Kenya coalition would once again have a majority, but Kretschmer ruled out a continuation of an alliance with the Greens.

Kretschmer was pleased with the result. “We have every reason to celebrate,” he said in Dresden. “The people here in Saxony have trusted us. They did not vote in protest.” The country was able to have a stable government. “We are ready to continue to take on responsibility for this country.”

According to ARD, voter turnout in Saxony was 73.5 percent.
