Convincing victory: 1. FC Heidenheim tears apart counter-prone FC Augsburg

Status: 01.09.2024 17:43

Two games, six points: 1. FC Heidenheim, with a perfectly coordinated team, has torn apart the far too counter-prone FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga with a score of 4:0 (2:0).

On Sunday, Heidenheim celebrated its second win of the season. The FCH record now stands at six goals and no goals conceded. For the first time in its history, Heidenheim also won in the German top flight by four goals. These were scored by Paul Wanner (9th, trade meter), Léo Scienza (30th), Adrian Beck (69th) and Maximilian Breunig (74th).

The victory puts FCH, which has won all five of its competitive matches across all competitions, at the top of the Bundesliga table for the time being. Bayern Munich and SC Freiburg will have to stretch themselves in the late Sunday match (5.30 p.m.) to overtake Heidenheim as the leader before the international break.

18-year-old Wanner writes penalty history

It was a fast start. Augsburg’s Arne Maier provided the starting signal, so to speak, with a direct free kick from distance – the ball hit the crossbar, FCH goalkeeper Kevin Müller would not have been able to reach it (3′).

Then it continued with the next exciting scene: After a corner from Scienza, Heidenheim complained about a handball by Keven Schlotterbeck in the penalty area. Referee Martin Petersen decided on a penalty after checking the VAR and looking at the images.

The 18-year-old attacker Wanner converted it with ice-cold precision. This made him the youngest penalty scorer in Bundesliga history, displacing HSV idol Manfred Kaltz, who was a good month older when he scored his first penalty.

Augsburg fails on the aluminum, FCH effective

As a result, FCA had to struggle to find solutions in the attacking third with 63 percent of the ball possession. With 7:5 shots on goal in favor of the “Fuggerstädter”, luck was also lacking: After a corner kick, Schlotterbeck headed the ball onto the crossbar (26th minute) – for the second time in this match, the aluminum saved the hosts.

Heidenheim had the luck of the hard-working, but also played cleverly and repeatedly found themselves in promising counter-attack situations. And the FCH was simply more effective than Augsburg.

Striker Marvin Pieringer, newly moved back into the starting line-up, showed good vision after a cross from Jonas Föhrenbach and served Scienza, whose volley was not cleared off the line by Augsburg’s Jeffrey Gouweleeuw – 2-0 for Heidenheim. Pieringer even almost made it 3-0, but he narrowly missed the ball in the penalty area shortly before half-time (41′).

Heidenheim seals the deal with a double blow

Augsburg coach Jess Thorup reacted to the deficit and brought on a new man for the attack in the second half, Ruben Vargas, and Marius Wolf also came on as a winger. Mads Pedersen and Fredrik Jensen went off (46th minute). FCA tried to increase the pressure on the hosts, but they were unable to get through.

Instead, Heidenheim sealed the deal with perfect transition play. Wanner energetically won the ball in the half-field and passed it to Beck, who received help from the inside post from close range and scored to make it 3-0. Just a few minutes later, SSV Ulm’s Scienza initiated the next flawless move, then two jokers were given: Sirlord Conteh passed the ball across to Breunig, who tapped in.

The latter also prevented Augsburg from scoring a consolation goal – he cleared a header from Kristijan Jakic on the line after a corner kick (79′). Not much happened in the final phase.

FCH in Dortmund, Augsburg against St. Pauli

After the international break, 1. FC Heidenheim will travel to Borussia Dortmund (13.09., 20:30), while FC Augsburg will host newly promoted St. Pauli next Sunday (15.09., 15:30).
