What we know about the fatal shooting in the Michigan State Fair parking lot

NOVI, Mich. – A 14-year-old boy was killed and another 14-year-old boy was injured in a shooting near the Michigan State Fair in Novi.

On Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 9:56 p.m., police officers stationed at the Michigan State Fair heard gunshots coming from a parking lot near Grand River Avenue, southwest of the Suburban Collection Showplace.

The shooting was initially reported as an active shooting, and several surrounding police agencies responded. When officers arrived on the scene, they determined that was not the case.

Two 14-year-old boys were shot. Both were taken to a hospital, where one of the 14-year-olds was pronounced dead. The other 14-year-old boy is in stable condition, according to police.

According to police, the two boys took an Uber from Detroit to Farmington Hills and then took another Uber from Farmington Hills to the Michigan State Fair with some friends. The shooting occurred in the parking lot; no one was shot on the fairgrounds.

Unaccompanied minors are not permitted to enter the Michigan State Fair after 6 p.m.

Investigators believe the shooting was the result of an argument during the week. It is likely an isolated incident without any public threat.

A suspect has not been identified.

Michigan State Fair opens Sunday and Monday

The Michigan State Fair remains open, but with modified hours.

The fair opens at 10 a.m. The ticket office and entrance to the fair close at 6 p.m. and the exhibition grounds close at 7 p.m.

Persons under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult or guardian.

“After reviewing the incident by law enforcement officials, community leaders, and the Michigan State Fair Operations Team and Executive Committee, the Michigan State Fair will continue operating with even greater police presence and important adjustments to closing times and policies. The Michigan State Fair will close the box office and entrance at 6:00 p.m. and the fairgrounds at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday and Monday. For the remainder of the fair, all visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to enter.

“The Michigan State Fair continues these efforts on behalf of the important agricultural and ranching community and wants to honor and continue the commitment to revitalize the great tradition of the Michigan State Fair.
