Unparalleled biological diversity, picturesque landscapes and unique natural monuments characterise the Gauja National Park, the largest and oldest in Latvia. It was declared a protected area in 1973. Lynx, bears, moose – over 200 animal species and 900 plant species that have become rare in other parts of Europe have their home here. The heart of the national park is the Gauja River, which meanders through the country in many meanders, lined with ancient forests and red sandstone cliffs that were formed in the Devonian period and are over 400 million years old. Gauja National Park also has 200 caves that were dug into the sandstone by water. Many myths and legends surround them. The pagan tribes of the Livonians and Latgalians have lived here since ancient times. More than 500 cultural monuments – old castles, palaces, ruins and archaeological excavation sites bear witness to the long history of settlement. Gentle tourism is permitted in the national park. Hiking, cycling and, above all, canoeing on the Gauja offer a breathtaking natural experience. The most important holiday of the year for Latvians is St. John’s Day. On June 23rd, everyone goes to the countryside to celebrate the summer solstice according to pagan tradition. On “Ligo Night”, Latvians feel close to their pagan roots, their culture and their closeness to nature. Festive costumes, self-made flower wreaths and traditional folk songs, the magic of centuries-old rituals that were forbidden under Soviet rule, unite Latvians in preserving their own identity.
