French chansons of the Renaissance meet songs by Leonard Cohen at a concert in Aalen on Sunday, September 22nd.

Eels. The Ensemble Phoenix Munich will be a guest at the Villa Stützel on Sunday, September 22nd with four musicians. With the title “A Day with Suzanne – A Tribute to Leonard Cohen”, the musician and musical director of the ensemble, Joel Frederiksen, would like to remember the great modern singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, who died in 2016. This program, a homage to his art, represents a connection to the French Renaissance chanson.

Cohen, who liked to call himself a “chansonnier,” grew up in French-speaking Montreal, Canada. Leonard Cohen’s relationship with the French language and historical France is explored in thematic and musical connections to French chanson of the Renaissance.

This project unites Cohen musically and poetically with previous generations of “songwriters”. The famous 16th century chanson “Susanne un jour” by Orlando di Lasso meets Cohen’s Suzanne. Josquin des Pres’Adieu mes amours ou Dances by Pierre Attaingnant (Paris, 1529)

combine with Cohen’s songs, and the eras come closer together.

The Ensemble Phoenix Munich

With the founding of the Ensemble Phoenix Munich (2003), Joel Frederiksen had the opportunity to develop exciting program concepts and to explore new, innovative paths. His concert series in the Bavarian National Museum (in the Mars-Venus Hall), founded in 2007, achieved “cult status” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). The hallmarks of these concerts are new and original combinations of works that are based on careful research into sources. Another special feature of the ensemble is the involvement of well-known specialists from their respective home countries in programs with a regional focus.

The event begins at 7 p.m., doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are available from Reservix and all known advance booking offices, at [email protected] and 0162 9467882. More at alte-musik-aalen.de
