Suryakumar Yadav’s catch at the T20 World Cup sparks debate again. A post by a South African star causes a stir on the Internet.

India ended their drought of winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 this year. In a thrilling final against South Africa, Suryakumar Yadav took perhaps the most important catch of his career, with South Africa needing 15 off 6 balls to win and the ball seemingly going for a six. However, Suryakumar, who was playing at long off, had other plans.

Suryakumar threw the ball in the air when he realised his momentum would take him beyond the boundary ropes before coming back to catch the ball cleanly and send David Miller back to the pavilion. India eventually won the match by 7 runs and clinched the T20 World Cup.

While there was initial talk about the legality of Miller’s catch, the matter seemed to have calmed down. However, South African spinner Tabraiz Shami’s post on his social media account has reignited the debate. Sharing a video, Shamsi wrote, “If they had used this method to check the catch in the World Cup final, maybe it would have been ruled a no-out 😅”. The post garnered so much attention that the South African star had to clarify that it was just a joke.

Suryakumar Yadav named T20I captain

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav was named the T20I captain after the T20 World Cup, where Rohit Sharma was at the helm for India. Although Hardik Pandya was expected to be Rohit’s successor, the selection committee and new coach Gautam Gambhir wanted someone who would play all the matches and given Hardik’s concerns about his fitness, Suryakumar was given the nod.
