Sinner reaches third round of US Open 2024

Thursday’s action-packed day at the US Open began with number one seed Jannik Sinner moving into the round of 32 by defeating American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.

The reigning Australian Open winner needed one hour and 39 minutes to win, hitting three aces, winning 81 percent of his first serve points and making eight breaks.

Sinner improved his record to 50-5 this year and will next face fellow Australian Christopher O’Connell for a place in the round of 16.

O’Connell defeated Italian Mattia Bellucci 6:3, 6:4, 3:6, 6:3.

Sinner, who recently won the Cincinnati Open and is dealing with drama off the court due to his recently settled doping case, will be looking to claim his second major victory of the season in New York.

Other male winners of the day included No. 30 seed Matteo Arnaldi and Tomas Machac.

Machac easily defeated No. 16 seed Sebastian Korda, who recently won in Washington, DC, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, and Thompson dismissed No. 7 seed Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(2), 6-1, 7-5.

Also in action on Thursday will be third seed Carlos Alcaraz, fifth seed Daniil Medvedev and 14th seed Tommy Paul.

Kalinskaya reaches the round of 32

Russian tennis star Anna Kalinskaya advanced to the third round of the US Open on Thursday, defeating Hungarian Anna Bondar 6-2, 6-4.

Kalinskaya is currently ranked No. 15 in the world and has a 33-15 record this season. She wins 73 percent of her first serve points and has broken serve four times. She will next face No. 22 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia or Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain.

Other winners of the day in the women’s singles included No. 5 seed Jasmine Paolini, No. 18 seed Diana Shnaider, No. 30 seed Yulia Putintseva, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and American Ashlyn Krueger.

Maneiro defeated 31st seed Katie Boulter and Krueger defeated 21st seed Mirra Andreeva 6-1, 6-4.

Two-time champion Naomi Osaka will headline the night session in New York, with the Japanese star set to face former French Open finalist Karolina Muchova.

Muchova recently returned to the tour after wrist surgery.
