Will Lamar Jackson break Michael Vick’s rushing record this season?

Will Lamar Jackson break Michael Vick’s rushing record this season?

Jackson has led the Ravens in rushing yards for five straight seasons (since taking over as the starter in Week 1 of 2019). That should change this season with Derrick Henry joining Jackson in the backfield.

In offensive coordinator Todd Monken’s system, Jackson’s average runs per game dropped to a career-low 9.25 last season. The last time he rushed for 1,000 yards was in 2020, and he ran for 1,206 yards in his MVP season of 2019. When asked if the days of scoring 1,000-yard runs are likely behind him at this point, Jackson said he will do whatever it takes to win.

“That’s how I’ve always approached it,” Jackson said. “We used to have a run-heavy offense. We had a lot of read options. Now we throw the ball down the field. Then we have Derrick Henry, a running back who gets 2,000 yards in a season. So I probably won’t need my legs as much anymore.”

Nevertheless, Jackson lost weight in the offseason to get closer to his 2019-2020 weight, when he rushed for 1,000 yards in two consecutive seasons and averaged 6.6 yards per carry.

When general manager Eric DeCosta was asked for his opinion on Jackson’s training camp, the first thing he said was, “He looks damn fast.”

“I always say, if I get a chance, I’m going to try to score,” Jackson said. “I’m not trying to run and go out of bounds to get knocked down. If I get a chance, I’m going to go.”
