NORTH HELBY – After an impressive weekend at the Juanita Boddie Tournament, the Briarwood Christian Lions continued their season with two wins in a home three-way match.

Briarwood defeated the Leeds Green Wave and the Altamont Knights in straight sets at Briarwood Christian School on Tuesday, August 27.

The Lions began the afternoon with a showdown against Leeds, another Class 5A team from the Birmingham area, and got a good chance to see how they fare against another 5A team.

In the first set against the Green Wave, Briarwood was a tough opponent, but maintained the lead in the final points and secured the win.

The Lions won the set 25:20 and took a 1-0 lead.

From then on, Briarwood improved in the second set, gained an even bigger lead and took the win.

The 25:15 victory in the second set sealed the 2:0 victory and enabled another win without dropping a set.

The Lions used the momentum of that sweep to finish the night with another win, this time against Altamont.

Briarwood built a clear lead in the game and never gave it up until the team won the first set 25-11.

After winning the opening set by 14 points, the Lions also built a double-digit lead in the second set, paving the way to victory.

Briarwood’s 25-14 victory in the second set secured the 2-0 match victory and ensured that the team left the court without losing a set in the second three-way match in a row.

Julie Roberts led the Lions’ offense with 14 kills in both games of the three-way match. In defense, Clara Crawford recorded five blocks and thus provided power up front.

Leighton Hendley secured seven digs to lead the team in this category, and Sailor Eighmy was close behind with six digs.

Briarwood will play its first five-set match of the season on Thursday, August 29, welcoming fellow Class 5A county team Montevallo to Briarwood Christian School. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
