Springfield police announced Tuesday that officers “arrested” a chicken after it caused a disturbance in the Springfield Justice Center patrol parking lot near the corner of Fourth and A streets.

According to the department, officers arrested Penelope, the Springfield parking lot chicken, around 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Penelope was reportedly on the run from police for more than 48 hours until Springfield police negotiated a peaceful surrender by offering the chicken fresh watermelon.

Penelope was incarcerated in the Springfield City Jail for first-degree criminal mischief, hit-and-run, and attempted egg theft.

On Wednesday, officials were busy trying to find Penelope’s owner.
