Alexander Volkanovski reveals he will “probably” wait for the featherweight title fight as the UFC is not a fan of “floating” divisions.

Alexander Volkanovski reveals he will “probably” wait for the featherweight title fight as the UFC is not a fan of “floating” divisions.

Former featherweight world champion Alexander Volkanovski has been sitting on the sidelines since February, considering whether or not he will fight another fight between Ilia Topuria’s title defense against Max Holloway.

Following his title loss at UFC 298 to Ilia Topuria, Alexander Volkanovski informed the UFC that he would be taking some much-needed time off after suffering two KO losses in quick succession.

The promoter recently announced that Topuria’s first title defense will take place in October against Max Holloway at UFC 308, but “The Great” thought it would be sooner.

Alexander Volkanovski reveals he will “probably” wait for featherweight title fight

The former champion has admitted that he has no interest in fighting a featherweight contender bout as the promotion has already informed him that his next featherweight fight could be for the title.

“I told them I wanted a break, like the last one, so maybe I wanted to fight later in the year and they said maybe they would do it (Topuria vs. Holloway) and I thought it would be a little earlier, but in the end it was a date where I thought maybe I could have come back here,” Volkanovski began to explain in an interview with Sky Sports NZ.

“Everything will probably be pushed back a few months further than I’d like, but at the same time I can’t be active and just fight anyone or I can wait for the title. What gets me out of bed is a pure featherweight contender, that’s probably going to be tough,” Volk continued.

While Volkanovski hinted that he could move up to lightweight, naming the likes of Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier as possible dance partners, he appears to have already decided to wait for the climax of the Topuria-Holloway fight and then face the winner.

“Yeah, sure (you can assume I’ll face the winner of that fight), that’s exactly what’s happening. I can wait, or if I don’t want to wait, I can do something else. Or just wait, and the UFC has made it clear, and obviously that’s probably what I’ll do.

“I could have maybe done a lightweight fight, I think there are a lot of exciting fights there, but the UFC is not a big fan of fluctuations (between weight classes). They would say, ‘If you want to go to lightweight, you have to stay there,’ and then I might lose the featherweight title fight. It’s only a few months (to wait), I’m sure I’ll be fine,” Volk added.

Dana White hints at a fight between Alexander Volkanovski

Although “The Great” has claimed that he will “probably” wait for the featherweight title fight, UFC general manager Dana White hinted in an Instagram live video last Wednesday that there was news about the former champion’s fight.

During the live video, White was asked if a fight between Volkanovski and Oliveira was being considered, to which he replied: “Oliveira vs. Volkanovski? There will be news on both guys shortly.”

Curiously, the UFC boss also claimed that there would be fight news for “Blessed” Holloway soon, probably forgetting that his title fight against “El Matador” had already been announced.
