There is cautious optimism at Chelsea about their move for Victor Osimhen, as Stamford Bridge believe they can convince the Napoli striker to move with a salary that fits into their wage structure.

A new striker remains a priority for Enzo Maresca as he is wary of pushing forward with Nicolas Jackson as the only experienced No.9 in his squad. However, it remains questionable whether Osimhen will ultimately become a Chelsea player. He has a huge offer from Al Ahli and the Saudis are trying hard to get the Nigerian to accept it. There are also rumours that there could be a late move from PSG.

Further negotiations are taking place today. Chelsea have alternatives but it doesn’t sound like they are sure about signing Ivan Toney.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are still working on a deal to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United. A loan to Juventus is the other option for the United winger. Meanwhile, another Chelsea goalkeeper is set to leave – Djordje Peteovic is set to move to sister club Strasbourg on loan.

Jeremy Lee reports: “Although United have shown surprisingly uncharacteristic effectiveness in transfers this transfer window – i.e. we have actually gotten some good players at reasonable prices to fill positions that really needed to be filled – can someone please explain to me why Sterling has even appeared on the radar of the guys at Ineos?

“Replace an overpaid, underperforming player with a serious attitude problem with an even more overpaid, underperforming player with another serious – well, you get the idea! I note with caution that Sterling is compared to Alexis Sanchez on Wikipedia – and we will find out how well that has worked out for United. Keep your money in your pocket, Sir Jim, please, keep the faith.”

From Bretntford it is said that Ivan Toney can stay at the club. Chelsea and Al-Ahli have turned their attention to Victor Osimhen.

Manchester clubs face silent closure of transfer window

Jamie Jackson

Despite the sale of Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid for €95 million (£81.5 million) earlier this month, Manchester City are unlikely to replace the striker or complete any other deals before the summer transfer window closes at 11pm on Friday, although the usual caveat of never saying never still applies, in this correspondent’s view.

Across the city, Manchester United will be short of cash once the expected €50 million (£42.3m plus €10m) purchase of Manuel Ugarte is completed (which could happen on Thursday), but should Jadon Sancho leave permanently – the player prefers Chelsea, although Juventus are still interested – they could have enough funds to consider the signing of Raheem Sterling from the west London club.

News about a new summer signing, actually bad news. Brighton signed Matt O’Reilly, but he was injured in the first few minutes of his debut against Crawley. Fabian Hurzeler said: “It’s a bad injury, he needs an operation on his ankle and I can’t say how long he’ll be out for. We’ll support him and try to get him back on the pitch quickly. He’s got a good character and is a really positive guy. It’s really important to stay mentally strong and I’m sure he’ll come out of this stronger.”
