Tennis, ATP – US Open 2024: Fritz beats Berrettini

Before the match, Berrettini was enjoying the best year of his career in many respects, including his hold rate. One can imagine the Italian’s surprise when he managed less than half of his first serves against Louis Armstrong and missed three breaks against Fritz.

He was also outstanding in tiebreaks in 2024, winning the last seven in a row. That ended abruptly on Wednesday evening when Fritz won the second set 7-1.

Overall, Fritz was just too solid on his own serve. He didn’t have a single break point in the entire match and won 36 of 40 points on his first serve. Fritz also returned better than usual and defused Berrettini’s strong, flat serve by hitting one return after another and winning a total of 42 percent of the return points.

Fritz, ranked number 12 in the world, will next play against Argentinian Francisco Comesana.

The American won before his victory against Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli (7-5, 6-1, 6-2).

In the previous round of the US Open, Berrettini, seeded 44th, defeated Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas (7-6 (2), 6-2, 6-3).
