The workplace has undergone profound changes over the past four years as in-person work transitioned to remote work for millions of people and remote work became hybrid. With each change, the role of middle management has changed drastically.

During a fireside chat, Danielle Montana, senior vice president at Peppercomm, and Janella Escobar, communications and brand manager for the Southeast market at DPR Construction, explained how managers can embrace their growing importance by taking a player-coach approach in their reports to increase well-being and become a strategic lever for the business.

“Managers today are at a different place in the hierarchy than they used to be and have to manage several different roles simultaneously,” Montana began.

“This group is in a unique position to create that change on the ground. They are close enough to the grassroots to be able to talk to and understand junior staff, share any problems or concerns they may have and escalate them to the next level of leadership if necessary. But they are also responsible for implementing and driving business value.”

Montana stressed that Peppercomm places great importance on using humor in the workplace responsibly and sensitively. Everyone who starts at the agency must complete stand-up comedy training.
