A three-day trip to Seattle

A three-day trip to Seattle

Last week our team took a trip to Seattle, and oh my gosh, what a beautiful part of the world. The water! The pine trees! The coffee! Here are some photos if you want to see them…

Kate Bear

First, Jannelle Sanchez, Maureen Heffernan, Kaitlyn Teer, and I met with poet Kate Baer in Seattle for a Big Salad event. Kate’s poems always made us laugh and cry (“I’m a cool poet,” she joked during our conversation) and it was really fun to hang out together, eating smoked fish dip, discussing reality TV, and trying on lipsticks at Sephora, as one does.

Harry's Fine Foods

On the first evening we had a delicious dinner at Harry’s Fine Foods…

…and then stayed in their guest house next door. How GORGEOUS is this bedroom with all the matching fabrics?

There was a huge bathtub in my bedroom…

…and we were blown away by the design details, like that tug hook (I think it’s by Nickey Kehoe?). When we got there, I said, “I love seeing all the little things,” and Kaitlyn said, “Yeah! Let’s go corner by corner!” Such a treat.

Julian Harry's Delicatessen

One of the owners – Julian – came by in the evening with a bottle of wine. How sweet is he?

On our second day, we were delighted to host a Big Salad event where Kate and I talked about everything from parenting advice to orgasms to female friendship. (You can listen to a live recording here if you’d like; it’s free for all.) We LOVED spending time there with friends and readers. I’m always so moved at in-person events.

By the way: my dress matched the bathroom!

Seattle Seaplane

The next day we set off as a team on an adventure to the San Juan Islands. We took a SEAPLANE, which was very scary for all of us…

But once we were in the air, the flight felt dreamy and unreal. We saw a whale and Kaitlyn cried.

Roche Harbor Seattle Seaplane

After about 45 minutes we landed in Roche Harbor.

What a magical place. Have you ever been there? Do you go there often?

Our marketing director, Maureen, has five generations of family in Seattle, and her father drove us around in his boat. He told us the story, complete with classic dad quotes like, “Are you a little cold? Oh well… it’ll be OK.”

Joanna Goddard Kaitlyn Tar

Since our editors, like Kaitlyn above, live on the West Coast, it’s always a pleasure to see each other in person.

Janelle Sanchez

And the wonderful Jannelle.

San Juan Islands

The air smelled of pine and seaweed, and you could hear the rippling of water and the sound of birds.

Whirlpool Boat Seattle

When we finally returned to Seattle, we discovered hot tub boats on the lake! How fun is that? (The boys would freak out.) We loved Seattle – thank you to this wonderful city for such a wonderful stay.

Have you ever been to Seattle? Do you live there? Please tell us!

PS: A colorful Seattle home with a rainy day trick and Sukhie’s pattern-loving outfit week.
