After his triumph, 34-year-old Dan told Sky Sports: “I just tried to keep fighting. At 4-0 I thought I was out. I felt a bit sorry for myself. But I didn’t want to go out of another Grand Slam tournament without a big fight and a whimper. I just tried to win one game at a time.”

He continued: “It was an amazing game. I just want to go to bed.”

As the Birmingham-born athlete prepares for his second-round match against Argentinian Mariano Navone, HELLO! as we delve deep into Dan’s personal life away from the spotlight, covering everything from his girlfriend to his family.

Dan is currently in a long-term relationship with his girlfriend Aleah. Although the couple have remained tight-lipped about their marital status, it’s clear that the two have gone from strength to strength since they first met in 2017.

Aleah, who reportedly studied at Cheltenham, is a regular on the sidelines and often travels with Dan when he competes abroad.

They live together in Cheltenham and seem to enjoy their time in the countryside. During a chat with Gloucestershire Live in 2020, Dan spoke fondly of his hometown, saying: “It’s easy to be here. There’s a good cafe (The Coffee Dispensary on Regent Street) which always helps. Aleah and I always look for one when I’m on tour.”

When asked about his favourite place in town, he replied: “Probably the cafe. No, actually it’s the racecourse. I don’t like going to the races during festival week because it’s too busy, but I went to the meeting last month. I made a bet. I love horses. If I had any, I would definitely watch them train.”

Growing up, the star enjoyed playing squash before taking up tennis with his father at the age of seven. He trained at West Warwickshire Tennis Club in Solihull and moved to Loughborough at the age of 13 to live with a host family while training at the LTA Academy at Loughborough University.

In an article for The Telegraph, Dan’s uncle James said: “We are a big family and scattered all over the world, but we all make sure to stay in touch after his games, whether it’s online at work or watching the games live on TV.”
