NY recorded record numbers of tourists and spending in 2023

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WWNY) – The state says a record number of tourists visited New York last year and spent a record amount of money.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday that 306.3 million people will visit New York in 2023.

They spent $88 billion on shelter, food, gasoline and other items.

Their spending had a $137 billion economic ripple effect across the state.

State and local tax revenues generated by tourism saved the average New York household $1,420 in taxes.

Growth by region

According to data, New York City saw the largest increase in visitor spending between 2022 and last year.

Meanwhile, the Thousand Islands region, which includes Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Oswego counties, saw the lowest growth.

In 2023, tourists in the Thousand Islands region spent $725 million.

In the Adirondack region, which includes Lewis County, visitors spent $2.3 billion last year.

Tourism in the North

In 2023, according to the state government, tourists in the border triangle spent the following amounts:

  • Jefferson County: $331 million
  • St. Lawrence County: $166 million
  • Lewis County: $62.6 million
