Marvel Studios unveils new Deadpool and Wolverine VFX video

Deadpool and Wolverine’s scary villain gets her powers.

Deadpool and Wolverine has a new VFX video showing how Cassandra Nova gets her hands under the skin of our heroes. This movie is full of wild moments and the scary villain is no exception. Marvel Studios showed how Emma Corrin’s telepathic terror came to life on screen. Deadpool and Wolverine VFX supervisor Swen Gillberg walks fans through Nova’s ability to physically penetrate the psyche of her opponents. It’s a lot of complex work based on the character’s comic book origins. Director Shawn Levy had a few favorite panels that he was keen to include in the film. Corrin’s portrayal gave the X-Men villain just enough menace amidst all the jokes and Marvel references that are sprinkled throughout the film. Deadpool and Wolverine.

“In our development processes, we experimented with different thicknesses of skin,” Gillberg explained. “And I liked her thinner because we actually wanted to see the detail of her knuckles in his skin. There’s definitely a skull in those heads, and she’s definitely working around that. And then when the fingers go over the eyeballs, the eyeballs pop out, and it’s great.”

“So, for the hands through the face, Shawn and the VFX teams started with comic book references. There are some key comic book frames that we really tried to hit. Her fingers like come through the nostrils, the eyeballs, and the ears,” the VXF supervisor continued. “Anytime we replace limbs or faces on Emma’s hand, it has to go somewhere. So we just put it to the side or on that side or out of frame. Then on the day we did clean plates to clean up the arm of the hand, and then we did a fully digital hand and arm. Then into a mostly digital face.”

The big villain of Deadpool and Wolverine was in top form

“[I felt] absolutely crazy,” smiled Corrin. “I felt so bad when we went to the screening the other day. Because we saw it after the premiere in New York with all these Lincoln Center full of fans, and everyone was so excited when they saw [Evans] on the screen, and then after three minutes, I killed him. I felt terrible. I hid in my seat. Yes, it was weird. Not something I would have thought a few years ago if you had asked me.”

“This is something [Marvel] “That’s what makes the cameos so good,” they continued. “You know, they give people what they want. They give them cameos. But they don’t use them for no reason. They’re all there for a reason. And I think you really feel that. Or, I hope people feel that, because I think they’re used really cleverly.”
