Court documents show victim of fatal highway shooting was targeted

BATON ROUGE – According to court documents, the suspect and victim of a fatal double shooting on I-110 were seen together before, during and after the incident.

Tyquincy James, 24, was arrested Tuesday on several charges, including first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

Baton Rouge police say James shot 22-year-old Antoine Bowie and an unnamed passenger on August 17 on northbound I-110 at Dayton St. near ExxonMobil. Bowie was pronounced dead at the scene, and police say his passenger was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the face. The passenger is expected to survive.

According to court documents, James and Bowie’s vehicles were captured together on surveillance video before, during and after the murder. James was observed driving a red four-door Kia, accompanied by a 16-year-old juvenile suspect, whose name has not been released because of his age.

According to the affidavit, police found James’ vehicle Tuesday morning. He was arrested as he left an apartment, and during a subsequent search, police found a Glock 17 pistol with an extended magazine and a machine gun conversion kit hidden “right in the attic.”

James faces several charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon or dangerous instrument, inducing juveniles to commit crimes and possession of a machine gun. Police say James had “specific intent to kill Bowie,” the affidavit states.

The BRPD has not released details on whether the teen was arrested in this case.
