Indianapolis Moms: Internet Safety Tips for Parents – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — As we begin the new school year, it’s important for parents to talk to their children about basic online safety practices. In today’s digital landscape, the internet is full of potential risks, from scammers to malicious actors, so vigilance is paramount.

“Sometimes we think something sounds so great and exciting and we act quickly, but we have to pause for a moment. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” explains Andee Bookmyer of Indianapolis Moms.

Bookmyer stresses the importance of using common sense alongside safe internet practices. She said users should avoid anything suspicious and never open attachments or download files if they are unsure of the sender’s identity.

“There are so many scams on the Internet via text message or over the phone, even we have to be very vigilant and alert,” Bookmyer said.

Experts advise paying attention to details, such as typos or errors, as these can be signs of phishing attempts. Be cautious of mass emails as well.

Bookmyer also said, “If you receive this email and you notice any spelling or grammatical errors, or you notice that the logo looks similar or sketchy in any way.”

To protect your online presence, use strong, unique passwords that combine letters, numbers and symbols, and enable multi-factor authentication wherever possible. Avoid reusing passwords for multiple accounts to increase your security.
