New video shows Nancy Pelosi calling Trump an “enemy within” shortly after the January 6 attack

WASHINGTON – Just hours after a mob of Donald Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol and attacked dozens of police officers in an attempt to get to members of Congress, then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California) called the then-president “an enemy within.”

The comments came in a video by documentary filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi, Pelosi’s daughter, that HBO recently delivered to Congress. NBC News on Tuesday reviewed more than 30 minutes of video footage from the roughly 48 hours surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, including a video showing Pelosi being led away from the building by her security staff while urging her staff to call the National Guard to the Capitol.

The newly surfaced remarks go further than her public comments on Jan. 7, when she said Trump had “incited an armed insurrection against America” and “instigated” an attack that would “forever stain our nation’s history.”

According to the HBO video, Pelosi spoke to her staff that same day while sitting under an ornate mirror that had been smashed when the pro-Trump mob ransacked her office a few hours earlier.

“We swear to protect our country from all enemies, foreign and domestic,” she said. “There is an enemy in the White House. And we should not mince our words about it.”

The previously unreleased video also shows Pelosi taking responsibility for not questioning law enforcement more about their preparations for the attack.

“Why wasn’t the National Guard there from the beginning?” Pelosi asked. “They obviously didn’t know, and I take responsibility for them not being prepared for more right away,” she said as she was escorted away by security forces on Jan. 6. “It’s stupid that we’re in this situation.”

“You thought these people would be civilized? You thought these people would care? What’s missing here in terms of anticipation?” she added.

The comments also show that Pelosi was skeptical of the motivations of law enforcement, which generally lean conservative. (A senior FBI official, for example, was warned in the hours after the attack that many within the office were “sympathizers” of the Capitol rioters.)

“Shame on us,” Pelosi said as her security detail escorted her to nearby Fort McNair, where several members of Congress landed on the evening of Jan. 6 as the facility was transformed into a command center for the presidents. “Shame on us. Frankly, I’m suspicious of them and their motives.”

The House committee on January 6 ultimately shied away from focusing on law enforcement failures leading up to the attack, instead focusing – as Pelosi did in the immediate aftermath of the Capitol insurrection – on Trump’s role.

The new video also shows Senator Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) joking about Trump pardoning the rioters – a position that Trump, once again the Republican presidential nominee, now supports, calling the Jan. 6 defendants “hostages” and “incredible patriots.”

When Pelosi’s daughter asks her early on the morning of Jan. 7 how she feels after Congress confirmed his election defeat and is now “done” with Trump, a weary Pelosi says in the new video that his actions must have consequences.

“I’m just sickened by what he did to the Capitol and the country today,” Pelosi said. “He must pay a price for that.”
