Brazos County Commissioners Discuss County Clerk Position After Arrest

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Brazos County Commissioners met Tuesday to discuss several matters, including the recent controversy surrounding County Clerk Gabriel Garcia.

Garcia and his ex-girlfriend, a former office employee, were both arrested on assault charges two weekends ago following an altercation outside Garcia’s home. The charges were later dropped by the district attorney due to “lack of evidence.”

During the meeting, commissioners discussed Garcia’s role as county clerk in closed session, but the county’s general counsel said the discussions would not be made public and that no action had been taken.

In response to questions about the county’s policy regarding personal relationships in the workplace, officials stated that while a nepotism policy applies to blood or in-law relatives, there are no specific policies for relationships within a partnership.

The general counsel also pointed out that Garcia’s actions as an elected official are largely outside the district’s jurisdiction.
