Watch for warning signs of heat-related illness

The National Weather Service has issued a heat warning for many parts of West Virginia.

With temperatures expected to reach triple digits, a heat advisory or severe weather warning is in effect for Clarksburg, Parkersburg, Huntington, Charleston, Sutton and surrounding areas from Wednesday noon until 8 p.m.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heat stroke is the most serious and potentially fatal heat-related illness. Symptoms include confusion, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, seizures, and a very high body temperature.

To help potential victims, call 911. Move them to a cool, shaded area, cool the skin with cold water, and place wet towels or ice on the head, neck, armpits, and groin. Allow air to circulate to speed the cooling process.

The National Weather Service recommends checking on elderly relatives and neighbors and keeping an eye on small children and pets.
