Kansas, Kentucky and in-state rivals are on Brown’s basketball schedule

Kansas, Kentucky and in-state rivals are on Brown’s basketball schedule

Two away games against top-ranked teams, back-to-back games against in-state rivals, and return games against an opponent in the Ivy League title game are the highlights of the Brown basketball team’s schedule.

The Bears released their 2024-25 schedule on Tuesday afternoon, and it includes some headlines. Kansas, Kentucky, Bryant, Rhode Island and two matchups with Yale at key points in the season all stand out.

To close out the calendar year, Brown will face the Jayhawks and Wildcats. The Bears travel to Allen Fieldhouse on Dec. 22 and visit Rupp Arena on New Year’s Eve. Kansas and Kentucky have won a combined 12 national championships, including the Jayhawks in 2022.

Those two games come after Brown’s exam break, and the two games to close out the first semester are against the Bulldogs and Rams. The Bears visit Bryant on Dec. 3 looking to rebound from their home loss last year.

Brown hosts URI on Dec. 10, seeking a fourth straight win over the Rams for the first time since the 1970s. The Bears travel to open conference play and stay home to close. They will face the Bulldogs again after playing a thriller in the Ivy Madness title game in March. Yale reached its last NCAA Tournament on a buzzer beater, and the two matchups on Jan. 11 and March 8 could help determine who is in the running for March Madness this time around.

More: Rhode Island Basketball hosts Providence on December 7. Here is the complete non-conference schedule.

Brown will also play three home games in as many days as part of the College Hill Classic, a tournament at the Pizzitola Center. The Bears will host New Hampshire, Holy Cross and Sacred Heart for three consecutive meetings from Nov. 15-17. Brown lost at the Wildcats last year and rolled over the Pioneers at home in 2021-22.

The Bears open the season at Siena on Nov. 4 and play their first home game against Maine on Nov. 10. Brown finishes its nonconference schedule with Johnson & Wales on Jan. 5 before playing five of its first seven league games on the road. That stretch of road includes three straight games at Penn, at Princeton and at Columbia before a home game against Princeton on Valentine’s Day.

The Bears finished the 2023-24 season just 13-18 overall, but hit their stride at the right time, winning seven straight games before a 62-61 win over Yale. That included a surprise 90-81 win over the Tigers in the opening game of Ivy Madness, when Brown knocked the regular-season champions out of the four-team Columbia. The Bears beat all seven of their conference opponents during that winning streak that stretched into March.

Brown brings a strong one-two punch to the lineup with seniors Kino Lilly Jr. and Nana Owusu-Anane. The Bears also bring a four-member freshman class led by Massachusetts guard Jeremiah Jenkins. AJ Lesburt, Landon Lewis, Aaron Cooley and Lyndel Erold were all rotation members at the end of last season.

The changes at Brown start with the coaching staff, as longtime associate head coach TJ Sorrentine is moving to the Washington Wizards and director of basketball operations Sydney Armand is taking an assistant position with the Crusaders. The Bears have hired former Valparaiso head coach Matt Lottich and former Denison University assistant coach DeVon Price to fill those two positions. Brown also lost two potential small forwards – Kalu Anya transferred to Saint Louis to join former assistant coach Antoine Gray, and Jacob Dar, who verbally committed to Division II, transferred to Rice.
