Attempted robbery and shooting at Fashion Island in Newport Beach – NBC Los Angeles

Newport Beach police are searching for three men who allegedly robbed two people outside Fashion Island Mall on Monday evening.

Police arrived at the Newport Beach mall at around 11:26 p.m. Two people were in the parking lot and were about to leave the mall when they were robbed.

The two friends were getting into their cars, a Ferrari and a Rolls Royce, when three men wearing ski masks approached them. One of the victims was robbed of his watch and wallet.

According to police, at least one of the masked men was armed with a weapon.

The group tried to steal the second victim’s Ferrari, but he managed to drive away. One of the masked men shot at the car and smashed the window.

The victim was able to reach a nearby gas station with minor injuries and called 911.

According to police, the masked robbers left the scene in a blue Kia sedan.

“I’m shocked, but I’m also a little scared because I walk a long way home from where I parked,” said Angie Francis, a shopper. “The fact that it’s so close to my home and happens so often is scary.”

This is the second violent crime reported in the area this summer. In July, a 68-year-old woman traveling to Southern California from New Zealand was struck and killed by a getaway car during a robbery on Fashion Island.
