Children’s book sparked minivan fire in Burke County

BURKE COUNTY, NC (WBTV) – Firefighters in Burke County were called to a minivan fire over the weekend that was sparked by a children’s book.

The Fire and Rescue Service George Hildebran said on Sunday that a child car seat caught fire shortly after getting out of the car.

After the flames were extinguished, the Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the fire had been started by a button battery in a book left under the seat.

Photos of the fire showed that the car seat upholstery had burned and some of the plastic had melted.

Although firefighters did not say exactly what type of battery was used in the fire, most button batteries are made of lithium. According to the US Fire DepartmentStoring lithium-ion batteries in direct sunlight or in hot cars can be dangerous. Ideally, they should be stored at room temperature.
