What is a Strap Match? Explained before CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre at WWE Bash in Berlin 2024

CM Punk and Drew McIntyre will face each other in a strap match at Bash in Berlin 2024.

CM Punk and Drew McIntyre are the red brand’s biggest rivals, who have been feuding with each other since the beginning of the year.

Both had a tough run and couldn’t get rid of each other. Their first match was at SummerSlam 2024, where Drew McIntyre took the win and Punk once again took the bracelet.

Most thought their rivalry was over, but CM Punk made it clear that things would not calm down until he got his bracelet back from McIntyre. Both were involved in a brawl that saw Punk knock Drew down with the leather belt. The following week, Punk challenged Drew McIntyre to a Strap Match at Bash in Berlin and the match was confirmed for the show. Before they face off at Bash in Berlin, here’s a look at what the Strap Match is all about.

What is a strap match?

A strap match in WWE uses a leather strap with wrestlers tied to either end. Unlike the normal match, instead of relying on pinfall, submission, count-outs and disqualifications to win, you must touch all four top turnbuckles and pull your opponents along to win the match. Any interruption by the opponent will void the count and the wrestler must touch the turnbuckles again to get the count.

There are a number of variations of the Strap Match that go by different names, including Dog Collar Match, Four Corners Strap Match, Russian Chain Match, and Texas Bullrope Match. A Dog Collar Match uses a leather strap, but the straps are attached to the wrestler’s neck rather than the wrist. The WWE has never hosted the Dog Collar Match, but has held it in AAEW, ROH, and other independent circuits.

The Russian Rope Match involves a 15-foot chain being tied around the wrestler’s wrist and used as a weapon. The Texas Bull Rope Match involves a bull rope being used to tie the wrestlers with a bell in the middle of the rope that can be used as a weapon. To win the match, one must touch all four turnbuckles.

The match between Drew McIntyre and CM Punk is the Four Corners Strap Match, as officially announced by Michael Cole on the August 26, 2024 episode of WWE Raw.
