Google accidentally confirms Android 15 for Pixel will be released in October

Google has always released a new version of Android along with its flagship Pixel phones. However, this year it bucked the trend and released the Pixel 9 early, which runs the 10-month-old Android 14 instead. This is despite the fact that Android 15 has been in public beta testing since April 2024 and the operating system should be ready for public rollout according to Google’s release schedule. A recent report suggested that Android 15 won’t be released until October. Now, Google has inadvertently confirmed when Android 15 will be available to the public.

Android expert Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority has found that Google has updated the release notes for the Android Beta Exit OTA that will downgrade your Pixel to Android 14. Now it specifically states that Android 15 will be released in October.

This timeline will help you decide whether to keep running the Android 15 beta on your Pixel or switch back to the stable version of Android 14. If you choose the former, you’ll have to ignore the “Android Beta Exit” OTA update prompt on your Pixel for the next 1.5 months.

It is surprising and unclear why Google suddenly updated the release notes for the Android 14 downgrade OTA to announce the public release date of Android 15.

Google reportedly didn’t launch Android 15 with the Pixel 9 series in August because it wanted to focus on the stability of the platform. Major new Android builds are usually buggy at launch, which is something Google wants to avoid with Android 15 this year. Therefore, to ensure a smoother release, the company is taking extra time to iron out all the bugs.

Android 15 source code may be released next week

Google will apparently release Android 15 source code to AOSP as early as September 3, 2024. This will make the nearly month-long delay in releasing the final OTA for Pixel phones in October even more puzzling.

Based on Google’s previous release timeline for Android builds and monthly security patches, Android 15 was scheduled to arrive on October 7. The company usually releases new security patches and updates for Pixel devices on the first Monday of every month. However, one of Mishaal’s sources claimed the update might not roll out until mid-October.
