Novak Djokovic easily wins his first US Open match despite difficulties

Novak Djokovic began his title defense at the US Open with a comfortable win in straight sets that was not perfect but dominant.

The Serb did not have a good serve and played on hard courts for the first time since March. His advanced age was noticeable in his late start.

But none of this could hinder his 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Radu Albot.

“It was a solid start. I had problems with my serve and the rhythm on certain shots,” Djokovic said. “The start is always a challenge, especially when you haven’t played on this surface for 5, 6 months and you’ve just won Olympic gold and you’re playing on clay. I hadn’t played any official matches before the US Open, so I expect to be challenged a bit more in the first rounds.”

Djokovic, who is looking to win his 25th major tournament and break Margaret Court’s all-time record, made 10 double faults, 40 unforced errors and completed just 47 percent of his first serves.

Nevertheless, he did well against Albot and said that his operated knee was fine.

“My knee is really fine. I had no problems during the entire Olympic tournament and also in the first round. Knock on wood, everything is fine,” said Djokovic, who next faces fellow Serbian Laslo Djere. “A third round is guaranteed for one of the Serbs. Hopefully it will be me.”
