Billings Central Football relies on seniors, high expectations

BILLINGS — It’s dawn on a weekday in August, and like most teams in Montana, Billings Central football players can’t wait to start the day – and the season.

“You know, this is one of those years where we’ve had a lot of competition for spots, and that always makes you better,” Rams head coach Jim Stanton told MTN Sports.

While Central’s younger players begin their practices, the older players take advantage of what they call “Senior Sunrise” and enjoy some time together before heading out for their morning workout.

A moment later, all the players gather and trot towards the team’s equipment shed, staring at one wall in particular.

It’s not empty, but rather represents everything the football Rams have won, including last year’s conference title. It also shows what the Rams haven’t won recently — notably, a Class A state championship since 2018.

“There are a lot of guys that need to contribute, a lot of guys that already have a lot of experience. I think we have a perfect mix,” said running back/outside linebacker Jack DeBourg.

One of those veteran players is 6’0″ lineman Jackson Ritchie, who says he weighs about 300 pounds. Imagine the surprise when offensive and defensive opponents face him.

“It’s a good feeling, it’s fun to see how people react,” said the giant, laughing. “Yeah, there are a few guys who make jokes like ‘Oh my God.’ Just surprised, stuff like that.”

Ritchie, who estimates he grew about an inch over the summer, will lead a line that is designed to pave the way on offense and be overwhelming on defense.

Last year’s 9-1 season was fun but not exactly fulfilling for the Rams, so now they’re heading to the gym where they hope to paint a new number that says “State Champions.”

“It’s a new team this year. The energy is great. That’s a focus with this new graduating class,” Ritchie said.

“It’s really exciting to be here and see people back. Many of them will have bigger roles than last year,” DeBourg said.

The Rams’ season-opening game is Friday at 7 p.m. against Glendive at Herb Klindt Field on the campus of Rocky Mountain College.
