Three players from the Coritiba Crocodiles – three-time Brazilian football champions – die on their way to a championship match in Rio de Janeiro. The youngest of them: Lucas Barros, the captain of the Brazilian U23 national team. He is only 20 years old.

Team bus overturns

The Coritiba Crocodiles team is travelling in a bus when the terrible accident occurs. For reasons that are still unclear, the driver loses control of the vehicle on a bend. The bus rolls over and eventually comes to rest on its side. In addition to Lucas Barros, the players Lucas Padilha (42) and Daniel Antonio dos Santos (44) also died.as local media reports.

Six other passengers are injured. They are taken to a nearby hospital by the rescue team. The other 39 passengers are lucky and escape with only a fright and minor injuries.

Moving farewell letter from girlfriend

The family and the club are in shock. Lucas Barros’ girlfriend, Lays Novakovski, posted a long, moving farewell letter on Instagram. It said: “The most important part of me left today and I don’t know how to go on without you. This absence will be in my heart forever; nothing will fill it.”

Barros’ club also wrote on Instagram: “It is with great regret that we received the news of the tragic accident involving the Croco de Curitiba team. Our condolences go out to everyone’s families and friends during this time of grief. We wish you strength and our sincere condolences.”

All of Brazil mourns with the relatives. The planned game in Rio de Janeiro is cancelled after the tragic accident. (First World War)
